Acting City Manager Richard F. Herbek has named Mary Lee Peters as City of Newburgh Tax Collector. Mrs. Peters has worked in the City of Newburgh Tax Collector’s Office for 10 years. She replaces Marie Gida, who retired after 30 years of service.

Before coming to work for the City of Newburgh, Mrs. Peters worked in Accounts Payable/Receivable for Phelps Dodge, a major copper mining corporation. She also was employed by Cornwall Central School District as a teaching assistant in the Computer Lab, and as a clerk/secretary in the administrative offices, where she handled payroll and purchase orders, and assisted the Principal in dealing with student and parent concerns.

She studied accounting at Rockland Community College. She also volunteered locally at St. Mary’s CYO and the Zion Lions Basketball program.

“Excellent customer service has always been a priority of mine,” said Mary Lee. “I have always enjoyed the opportunity to get to know our residents and to assist them with their tax questions. One of my goals is to update our technology so as to serve our taxpayers even better.”

Acting City Manager Richard F. Herbek commented, “Mary Lee’s experience and long-time relationship with our taxpayers make her well-qualified for the position of Tax Collector.

She is dedicated to the people of the City of Newburgh, and I look forward to continuing to work with her in her new capacity.”
